Motorcycle
licences, the facts.
There are two types
of licence category available for motorcycles. To obtain a
leaner permit in either category you will need to do a
motorcycle
theory test. |
Category A1 - Scooter or motorcycle up
to 125cc with maximum power rating of 11kw. Minimum age 16 yrs
old. |
Category A - Motorcycle
(restricted to 25kw or a power to weight ratio of 0.16kw/kg
until 2 years after passing a full licence test). Minimum age 18
yrs old. |

Motorcycle Licences |
Some areas of confusion
about licences still
exist. Listed below are the facts to help avoid this. |
If you
are 18 yrs old you can obtain a category A learner permit without
previously having an A1 licence and you are not limited to riding 125cc
or 250cc bikes. |
The restriction on the
category A licence/permit does not limit the engine size of the
bike you can buy. |
If the
bike produces more than 25kw of power and exceeds the power to weight
ratio of 0.16kw/kg then it will need to be restricted. |
| If the
bike produces more than 25kw of power but does not exceed the power to
weight ratio of 0.16kw/kg then it does not need to be restricted. |
